Basics of competent web design

Recently, there have been frequent requests to “check out” one or another design. I always try to help those in need, in the hope of God’s mercy. But the problem is that, as a rule, there is nothing to appreciate.

Many mistakes migrate from layout to layout, from one designer to another. They are like a disease that needs urgent treatment. But no one does it, because some absolutely do not care, while others lack experience.

How to heal the problem

To get rid of banal problems and increase the design skill, it is enough just to know and understand the fundamentals of web design. Here about them that will be discussed.

Site is a system

The system is what will help to build a logically correct site that effectively performs the tasks. Organizing elements and bringing similarities to a common denominator is an important and responsible step at the web development stage.

Look carefully at the design you created. Are you sure that the three multi-colored “Buy” buttons on the first screen will help increase your website conversion? Ignoring the modular grid will also not give people an orgasm.

Put the layouts in order. Each category of elements should look and work the same and predictably.

Beauty is Utopia

Many designers behave like designers and this is incredibly awful. A true designer should behave like an engineer for whom the concept of beauty is alien. For him, efficiency is important, and all the rest is suspiciousness and prejudice. Therefore, each element on the page must fulfill a specific role.

It should be approximately as follows: the image on the whole screen is not a tribute to beauty or fashion, it is an image that enhances the emotional component of the project and pushes visitors to take action.

Stupidity is the norm

No one will reflect on the work of your interface. Therefore, the design must be developed with the idea that 90% of visitors are complete idiots. In this case, it (the interface) will turn out to be simple and understandable, not overloaded with complex logic and meaningless animation.

Simplicity and convenience are the main criteria to strive for. Often, everything happens exactly the opposite.

Color is an emotion

The choice of colors of the site and in particular its individual elements should be approached carefully and carefully. Color, like images, creates an emotion. It is very important that this emotion be correct and correspond to the task of the site.

I would recommend to study the theory of color selection and perception in more detail. But preferably not the one in which red is the color of blood, and yellow is the color of urine.

Typography is life

Careless, irresponsible and incompetent attitude to typography is able to nullify the entire process of the designer. Font selection and proper work with it is an important and difficult task, but it is worth discussing this in a separate, more voluminous article.
